Cisco CCNA for IT Supporters: Module 1 - Introduction to Networks (Series 9) charged (13 of 14) Finished 09:00 - 13:00 University Information Services, Roger Needham Building, Ely Training Room 2

The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programme is open to University IT Supporters. It covers network technology, protocols and theory at deeper levels reflective of University practices. There is a fee to attend this course and an additional fee to take the CCNA (200-120) certification exam.

CCNA Routing and Switching provides a comprehensive overview of networking concepts and skills, from network applications to the protocols and services provided to those applications by the lower layers of the network, with an emphasis on practical application, work-force readiness, and soft-skills development. You will progress from basic networking to more complex enterprise and theoretical networking models later in the curriculum.

There are four modules in the recommended sequence:

We offer this program as instructor led with online access to the curriculum with the support of interactive media and an online networks laboratory called NETLAB. There is a mix of lecture, demonstrations and a heavy emphasis on practical activities using live lab equipment and a simulation package.

Introduction to Networks is the first module of four modules in CCNA. Please book onto this first module to reserve your place for the whole programme.

This module introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and computer networks. The principles of IP addressing and fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. By the end of the course, you will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes.

Physical Sciences commercialisation workshop

Wednesday 5 October, 9-1.30pm including lunch, Maxwell Centre, West Cambridge

Are you interested in exploring potential commercial applications of your research?

Cambridge Enterprise is holding a workshop for academics, postdocs and PhD students in the Physical Sciences who are interested in learning more about developing their ideas and inventions into opportunities that are attractive to business and investors.

Speakers include:

Jeremy Baumberg, a leader in nanoscience and nanotechnology, who has worked for much of his career at the interface between academia and industry. He has led interdisciplinary nano-centres at the Universities of Cambridge and Southampton, and developed novel devices within Hitachi, IBM, and his spin-offs Mesophotonics and Base4.

Tuomas Knowles, who founded Fluidic Analytics Limited in 2013 and now serves as Chief Scientific Officer. His research interests are focused on using physical approaches to study the self-assembly of protein molecules both in the context of disease and for the synthesis of novel functional biomaterials.

The workshop offers:

  • Experience-sharing and a Q&A panel with academics experienced in commercialisation of University research through a variety of channels
  • Discussion of issues surrounding commercial value, confidentiality, and intellectual property
  • How Cambridge Enterprise can help you commercialise your research

You’ll have the opportunity to work with Charles Boulton, from the Department of Engineering, on your commercial proposition before the event, should you wish to get a head start. Charles will help you to identify where, how and why commercial value can be realised. Three propositions will be presented and discussed in this session as examples. If you would like to be involved, please indicate when you register and we will get in touch about next steps.

We welcome applications from academics, postdocs and PhD students at the University of Cambridge.

Effective Undergraduate Supervision (Life Sciences) Finished 13:30 - 16:30 NA - Mill Lane, Seminar Room A

Why this course might make a difference:
Looking back at your experience of education you can probably remember those teachers and lecturers who were excellent. We remember the ones who were good because they have left a lasting impact on us; shaping both our learning in the past and our approach to teaching at Cambridge. Supervising undergraduate students at Cambridge can be one of the most rewarding activities for PhDs and Postdocs and this course is designed to make sure that you can offer your best and hopefully be one of those memorable teachers for someone else.

A blended workshop incorporates personal reflection on teaching practice, discussion of real teaching scenarios, a chance to ask questions from an experienced supervisor and access to practical information about organising and carrying out your supervisions.

This training is required by many colleges before you can carry out supervisions and is always a popular course.

About the trainer:
The course trainer is Dr Ben Murton who has over 12 years of teaching experience in Cambridge and was an undergraduate here as well. He is now a College Teaching Associate at St John's, a tutor on the Teaching Associates Programme and offers supervision coaching for Life Sciences supervisors.

If you have any specific questions you are welcome to contact him before the course on Ben.Murton@admin.cam.ac.uk
