Scientific Writing

This 2 half-day course focuses on the structure of good scientific writing using writing exercises as an integral part of the workshop. The course will look at the practical process of writing, the nature of scientific publishing, and the importance of editing. The day will include editing sessions in which you apply the ideas you have learnt to your own writing. For this, you will need to write a 300-word abstract about your work in advance and have it available to work on during the workshop. Asbestos Awareness Training

This training will provide delegates with a basic knowledge of asbestos awareness, the risks and the legal requirements under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. Asbestos awareness training is mandatory for all University personnel meeting the prerequisites of the Asbestos Regulations and ACoPs (Accepted Codes of Practice). Training is typically required for personnel who could inadvertently disturb asbestos during the course of their work/activities or instruct someone to do so, eg personnel who work on buildings. |

Virtual Writing Retreats

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list? Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique. These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment. The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session). Contrary to the common belief that Egypt is perpetually hyper-arid, our latest archaeological findings in the Theban Mountain reveal periods of remarkable wet conditions during the New Kingdom and Roman eras. Join us in unravelling the mysteries behind the extraordinary preservation of diverse plant species and trade goods from these periods of higher temperatures in the late Holocene. Was this due to economic prosperity, extensive trade networks, or mere chance? To deepen our understanding, we have created a comprehensive database of vegetal remains from archaeological sites across Egypt, spanning from the predynastic to Coptic eras. Using cutting-edge Geographic Information Systems (GIS), climate modelling, and ecological analysis, we're mapping the intricate relationship between biodiversity, climate change, and human activity over millennia. Furthermore, we're pioneering molecular methods to analyse DNA in soil and mudbrick remains, aiming to uncover the presence of ancient plants in tombs, Coptic settlements, and ancient springs. This innovative approach seeks to correlate our DNA findings with historical data, providing new insights into Egypt's botanical past. Our research not only captivates archaeologists but also offers crucial insights into how past warming episodes influenced biodiversity in the Saharan region, shedding light on what we might expect as global warming progresses.
