The Emerging Research Leaders' Development Programme (ERLDP) has been designed for you as a postdoctoral researcher/member of research staff aspiring to achieve research independence in order to lead your own research group and/or to become research leaders in your field through a variety of career pathways including academia. It is a unique opportunity for you to develop and reflect upon your personal leadership style in the context of those who you lead in either an official or unofficial capacity. We will provide tailored training workshops and one-to-one coaching sessions so you can develop solutions relating to your current situation and your future needs. Attending participants will also be introduced to online resources and a masterclass on the first day of the programme.
Workshop 1 (full day): Introduction to the programme; the importance of self-leadership; the strategic academic (masterclass)
Workshop 2 (full day): Leading others collaboratively
Workshop 3 (half day): A strategic approach to career management
End of Programme Presentation and Networking Event (two hours): You will reflect upon your learnings' from being a participant on the programme and receive your programme completion certificate.
- Postdoctoral researchers/research staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Mathematics (STEMM) disciplines
- To be eligible for the programme, it is expected that you will have applied or are aiming to apply for independent research funding and that you are currently responsible for managing/supervising students or others (officially or unofficially). You also need to demonstrate your motivation for wanting to be a participant on the programme.
It is essential that selected participants are able to commit to attending all the elements of the programme as scheduled

This programme has been designed to help you:
- to explore your understanding of ‘leadership’ and assess the impact of this understanding on your current actions and behaviours;
- to provide you with relevant tools, techniques, models and theories to engage in ‘self-leadership’ as the starting point for leading others collaboratively and your career management;
- to build your confidence and to help you to realise your full potential.
- Your application to attend the programme will not be considered until we have received your online application form.
- Successful applicants will be contacted on the email provided in the application form in early April.
- Please note that places are limited and may be offered subject to a short pre-programme interview with Dr Sharon Saunders. If you are not offered a place, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list.
- In 2014 end of programme evaluation survey, 84.6% of respondents felt that the programme had an immediate impact on their life as a researcher and 92.3% of respondents would recommend the programme (89% survey response rate);
- Participants found the coaching sessions useful in helping them to consolidate their learning and understand how they could apply some of the techniques and theories in their current working environment;
- One particular quoted, "the coaching sessions were invaluable. They helped me in identifying my strengths, how to make them stand out and use them to achieve my short-term goals, and finally in planning my future steps"
- Dr Sharon Saunders' research interests centre on how knowledge about leadership is produced in order to inform leadership development interventions
- Her own career story spans two continents and tells of both academic and professional roles in a wide range of organisations and settings meaning she has a wide range of perspectives and experience to draw upon
- Two full day workshops and one workshop of three and a half hours. Two hour end of programme presentation and networking event
- Three one hour coaching sessions with a professional coach (dates to be negotiated on an individual basis).
- It is expected that all participants will commit to an additional six hours to complete additional tasks and activities during the programme
