AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting 2015-16 PrerequisitesNew
The AAT Level 3, Diploma in Accounting, introduces to students to more complex financial processes and accounting tasks, the principles of VAT, professional ethics and develops their spreadsheet skills.
Departmental or College accounts staff who have completed Level 2, or who are already at a more intermediate level and are looking to develop their accounting skills.
Previous Knowledge
Prospective students must demonstrate that they have a sound understanding of the principles of double-entry book keeping gained from
- completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping/Certificate in Accounting;
- completion of AAT Foundation;
- completion of AAT Level 2; or
- previous accountancy experience, or qualifications.
Prospective students will be expected to demonstrate that this knowledge is up to date by completion of the AAT Skills Check .
Approval
In addition students' applications must be supported by their line managers and individuals must agree to the conditions of funding. Final acceptance on to the course will be subject to the Finance Training Manager's approval.

Accounts Preparation
- Preparation of final accounts for sole traders, developing your understanding of accounting systems and the environment and principles under which organisations operate.
- Accounting adjustments and accounting for fixed assets
Prepare Final Accounts for Sole Traders and Partnerships
- Legal requirements and preparation of partnership accounts, showing division of profits after adjusting for interest on capital, interest on drawings and any salaries due to each partner.
- Preparation of final accounts for partnerships and developing skills in restructuring accounting information.
- Preparing final accounts for sole traders, including the accounting treatment required to incorporate accruals and prepayments, provision for depreciation, irrecoverable debts and allowance for doubtful debts.
Professional Ethics
- Importance of ethical duties and how to work within the code to ensure that the public can gain confidence in accounting practices or functions.
- Protecting your and your organisation’s professional reputation and integrity.
Costs & Revenues
- Identifying why cost-accounting is an important tool to an organisation.
- Different approaches to cost accounting and making informed and reasoned judgements to guide management and aid decision making.
Spreadsheets
- How to use software for recording data in rows and columns, perform calculations with numerical data and present information using charts and graphs.
Indirect Tax
- Understanding current VAT regulations and building your knowledge of VAT registration requirements, different VAT schemes available, penalties for non-compliance and the different types of classification of supplies.
- Performing the calculations needed to complete a VAT return.
- Submitting completed documentation in a timely manner while maintaining an effective working relationship with the relevant tax authority.
The Diploma is split into six units:
- Accounts Preparation
- Prepare Final Accounts for Sole Traders and Partnerships
- Professional Ethics
- Costs & Revenues
- Spreadsheets
- Indirect tax
Students to complete and sit examinations sucessfully in all six units within a year
