CULP: Italian Basic for Academic Purposes (LAP)

Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Italian documents that they have come across or may meet in their research.

Students are encouraged to bring along their own texts and work in pairs to enhance the learning experience.

This group (Monday morning) has been added based on the great demand for an Italian Academic Reading course this year.

It will operate on the same principles as the Thursday group (absolute beginners to intermediate) and is initially offered for the Michaelmas term only. Numbers usually dwindle in Lent and this group will join the Thursday group.

• Research students from the School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and the School of Humanities & Social Sciences

• Research students based within the School of Arts & Humanities or School of Humanities & Social Sciences only.

N.B. This group is likely to be small and the overall level the course will operate at (basic/intermediate) will depend upon the language proficiency and interest of the students.

Develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical, stylistic commentary, and translation.
