Chemistry: Information skills for Chemistry PDRAs

Description

The session will consist of a demonstration of how to find the chemical information, journal articles and books that Chemistry postdoctoral researchers need, whether in print or electronic format, using the online library catalogues, the internet, and bibliographic and chemical databases. The trainer will also try to touch upon issues such as open access, altmetrics, how to keep up to date with the latest scientific literature, using reference managers, and anything else that you say you are interested in and need to know about (time permitting).

Target audience
  • All Post-Doctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) in the Department of Chemistry

Objectives

After attending this session Chemistry PDRAs will be able to:

  • Search for full-text ejournals/articles and ebooks and electronic databases, using the online library catalogues (LibrarySearch and LibrarySearch+), search engines (e.g. Google Scholar), and the Chemistry Library website
  • Interpret the results of these searches
  • Access the full text of ejournals and electronic books, and electronic databases, both on- and off-campus
  • Make requests for resources not available in Cambridge
  • Identify which tools are available for keeping up to date with the latest research in their field
  • Identify which reference managers are available
  • Deposit their publications on the University's Open Access website
  • Understand what altmetrics are
Aims
  • To direct Post-Doctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) in the Department of Chemistry to the quickest and most-effective routes for finding the chemical information, journal articles and books that they need, whether in print or electronic format.
  • To identify and try to support any other information needs that PDRAs encounter during their day-to-day research.

Duration

One session of thirty minutes

The trainer will also be available for half hour after the session so if you are able to stay a bit longer and have any further questions or issues that you want to raise, you can do so in a Q&A format.

  • This session will be delivered three times per year
  • If you attend one session feel free to attend another one later on
