CULP: Portuguese Intermediate 1 for Academic Purposes (LAP) (23 of 23) In progress 17:00 - 18:30 Centre of Latin American Studies, Alison Richard Building Room 204

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:

  • Solidifying strategies of reading of academic texts;
  • Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
  • Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

Alongside that, they will be requested to do grammar exercises related to the basic structures of the language, such as verbs and their complements.

At intermediate 2 level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

Drop In Session - Continuous Improvement [Places] 09:00 - 10:00 CPMO: MS Teams

A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Continuous Improvement team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

Generalised linear models (IN-PERSON) [Places] 09:30 - 17:00 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

Generalised linear models are the kind of models we would use if we had to deal with non-continuous response variables. For example, this happens if you have count data or a binary outcome.

This course aims to introduce generalised linear models, using the R software environment. Similar to Core statistics using R this course addresses the practical aspects of using these models, so you can explore real-life issues in the biological sciences. The Generalised linear models using R course builds heavily on the knowledge gained in the core statistics sessions, which means that the Core statistics using R course is a firm prerequisite for joining.

There are several aims to this course:

1. Be able to distinguish between linear models and generalised linear models

2. Analyse binary outcome and count data using R

3. Critically assess model fit

R is an open-source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free. We will be using the R Studio interface throughout the course. Most of the code will be focussed around the tidyverse and tidymodels packages, so a basic understanding of the tidyverse syntax is essential.

  • ♿ The training might take place at the Craik-Marshall training room. This is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access. Please put level access requirements in the "Special requirements" section, so we can take that into consideration when allocating the room.

Engaged Researcher - Creative Writing [Places] 10:00 - 12:30 West Hub, West Room 2

Have you ever wanted to get creative with your research? To discover how writing can bring a new perspective to your work? How your words can engage with new audiences about the academic research that you are passionate about?

This training will enable you to develop creative ways by which you can use writing to engage with the public; providing you with the resources to be more confident in developing and sharing creative writing responses to your area of research.

The course will introduce creative writing for poetry and prose, and textual writing for exhibition / display. It will discuss developing writing for performance.  The aim is to work with you to bring out the creative responses that lay within your own work. There will be the opportunity to receive written feedback throughout the week, and to discuss your work in a 1-to-1 session with the course tutor (if requested in advance).

The training will be led by David Cain. David’s most recent book, Truth Street, was shortlisted for the prestigious Forward Prizes for Poetry (2019). David brings his writing experience together with a passion for public engagement - he currently leads the delivery of the Cambridge Festival.

This practical in person session gives you opportunity to practice presenting in a supportive environment. Before attending, please prepare a 5 minute presentation. You will deliver your presentation to the rest of the participants and receive feedback.

You are invited to join an upcoming focus group on the experience of those with caring responsibilities at Cambridge. We want to understand more about people’s lived experiences of their working environment and work culture, and how those are affected by their caring roles, gender (and other protected characteristics). The discussions are inclusive and open to individuals of all genders.

The data from this focus group will complement other data being gathered – for example by the Staff Culture Survey circulated earlier this year – as part of the University’s application to renew its Silver Athena Swan Charter.

CULP: German Intermediate for Academic Purposes (LAP) (8 of 8) In progress 13:30 - 15:00 Faculty of Classics, Room 2.04

This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

This course will cover the quantitative background to underpin many of the electrochemical methods exploited by the research groups in the Department.

  • The first part ('Foundations') will cover the background physical chemistry relevant for electrochemical systems: Following a reminder of the basics of electrochemistry, we address the physical chemistry of metals, ionic solutions and the electrode/solution interface, including electrode dynamics, and connection to experimental measurements.
  • The second part ('Applications') will cover specific examples of applications drawn from active research groups in the department.
